First Stage - Seed
95 years ago, in 1925, Mr. Peter Tsui Yan Sau, himself a devout Catholic, saw the need of the pupils for greater spiritual guidance, and decided to gradually hand over the administration to the incoming Jesuits who were looking to serve in some local educational establishments.
Wah Yan College, Kowloon is one of the oldest and most prestigious secondary schools in Hong Kong, and was the first English-speaking college to be administered by local Chinese.
That’s the beginning of our home, Wah Yan.
Next Stage - Sprouting
Two decades later, around 1947, the school authorities began the search for a new campus as its enrolment further expanded.
A proposed acquisition of a site on Ho Man Tin Hill Road was turned down. After negotiations with the Government of Hong Kong, a piece of former paddy field was granted and it moved to the current premises on Waterloo Road in 1952.
In 1953, the present campus was officially opened by Governor Sir A. Grantham.
This portion of land was large by Hong Kong standards, making our home, WYK, one of the largest campuses in the urban Hong Kong area.
Which is 56 Waterloo Road.
Third Stage - Sapling
Gradually, the tree has made its way and grown into a sapling. It is young and has a slender trunk.
In the past 95 years, Wah Yan emphasises brotherhood as many of the school’s achievements are contributions from and collaboration with generations of Wahyanites. Each putting time to slowly irrigate the tree, and ensure that it is always stronger and healthier. In order to reach a hundred-year milestone, to climb to higher heights we must not omit what was in the past - the sapling is part of the solid foundation we have today.
Final Stage - Tree
Transcendence is the theme of the Open Days. The word describes the act of turning into a superior and better form than the previous state. Arriving at this milestone of 95 years of establishment, the school looks to transcend into a better place for education in nurturing the talents of tomorrow.
